2012 Chevrolet Cruze to get new features and improved consumption

The Americans from Chevrolet prepared some updates for the 2012 Cruze, improvements able to offer a better fuel consumption while some features that are currently optional will enter the standard equipping.

According to the official details, the 2012 Cruze gets as additional standard equipment the remote keyless entry, audio system with MP3 playback, rear defogger, power windows, air conditioning and a new driver information center delivering details about fuel economy, oil and tire pressure.

Other features which enter the standard equipping are Bluetooth and USB connectivity, cruise control, audio controls on the steering wheel and also leather treatment for the shift know and steering wheel. The safety features of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze include ten air bags (frontal, head curtain, knee, side), the StabiliTrak system which prevents rollover as well as traction control and anti-lock brakes (ABS).

If you want more for your car you can opt for a 7-inch touch screen navigation system, new 16 and 17-inch alloy wheels but also new exterior finishes such as Victory Red, Blue Topaz Metallic and Blue Granite Metallic. On the other hand, the fuel economy of the 2012 Cruze is slightly improved compared to the current model. Chevrolet introduced no new units but optimized the current 1.4-liter turbocharged unit which delivers 138 horsepower.

If the Cruze Eco equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox gets no improvements, the same model with a six-speed automatic transmission will offer an improved consumption of 6.0 liters/100 km, compared to 6.3 liters/100 km. As mentioned above, the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze equipped with the 138-horsepower 1.4-liter engine will offer a fuel economy of 6,1 liters/100 km, compared to the standard 6.5 liters/100 km. According to Chevrolet, this achievement is mainly due to a lower axle ratio which offers a 5% increase in highway fuel efficiency for Cruze.

Volkswagen Beetle R: See you in Frankfurt!

We’ve been hearing a lot about the Volkswagen Beetle lately and even though it’s not the most summer oriented of vehicles, it still has some news to share with us.

The latest of which is possibly the best for the performance enthusiast within each and every one of them, it is an “R” version of the 2012 VW Beetle.

In the world of Volkswagen, anything wearing an R badge doesn’t make sense to just about most of the regular buyers of the brand but it also means there’s quite the car underneath.

Most likely to premiere at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show the R version of the 2012 VW Beetle would be powered by a similar engine to the raunchy Golf R.

That means the retro model that’s to be launched in Frankfurt will be powered by a 2.0 liter four cylinder TSI turbocharged powerplant developing in the region of 240 horsepower.

For various cost reasons, the Germans are not going to be giving you the 4motion four wheel drive system with the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle R so there’s the issue of torque steer to discuss.

At 270 horsepower (as offered in the Golf R) a front wheel drive would struggle immensely to contain the fury of that turbocharger without some sort of clever differential and such.

Now that we understand why the power was slightly limited, we may as well enjoy how the Golf R will offer around 40 horsepower more than the most powerful version of the current 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.

Apart from the new engine, there’s also going to be a new sports suspension and a batch of interior and exterior styling tweaks meant to accentuate the added aggression.

I do hope that when they launch it, in Frankfurt or whatever, the Volkswagen Beetle R will look decent and relatively easily digestible, something the people at VWVortex aren’t that familiar with.

Interestingly, that’s not the only good news Volkswagen has for us. Apparently, they are considering chopping the roof of it and eventually producing a Beetle R Convertible version.

The price, availability and other boring real-world details will come some time in September, just before or at the Frankfurt Motor Show. By then, it’s quite likely that the Germans will have decided on the fate of the convertible as well.

Audi A1 gets a complete tuning treatment from Senner Tuning

The Germans from Senner Tuning decided that it's time to develop a new tuning package for the supermini-class vehicle revealed last year at the Geneva Motor Show. Therefore, the tuning company prepared a complete package for the current Audi A1, a tuning kit which seriously refreshes the exterior and interior appearance while under the bonnet, a significant increase can be seen too.

To clarify the situation from the beginning, the Senner tuners decided to improve the performance of the 1.4-liter TFSI unit which comes with the Audi A1. But until we talk about the performance upgrade, we will mention the noteworthy aesthetic improvements brought by the Germans.

At the exterior, the German supermini model comes with a nice brown metallic finish, a wider aspect thanks to new wheel and roof arches, side sills, a front apron, side skirts and a new rear bumper with a diffuser. The exterior tweaks are completed by a two-pipe exhaust system but also by a new set of 19-inch Barracuda Tzunamee alloy wheels fitted with 225/35 R19 tires.

As you can see, the exterior appearance is dominated by two colors, the brown metallic paint and the white finish of the wheels, upper part of the side mirrors and also the revised roof arches. At the interior, the Germans opted for a similar two-color approach with new sports seats and floor mats. Besides the visual improvements, Senner Tuning prepared a revised infotainment system too, but details on the new features are currently missing.

Mainly, these are the visual improvements brought by this tuning kit but fortunately the German specialists prepared some power upgrades too. As mentioned above, the Senner Tuning opted to improve the 1.4-liter TFSI gasoline unit which delivers 122 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque in standard. With some basic modifications such as a revised ECU unit and a high performance exhaust system, the specialists managed to squeeze 165 horsepower.

The last important improvement is the new KW adjustable sports suspension which significantly improves the ride. In terms of pricing, Senner Tuning claimed that the German model fitted with their new tuning package costs €36,590.

Mazda recalls hundreds of thousands of 3s for windshield wiper issues

Lovable and successful as the Mazda 3 may be, not even the immense sales figures guarantee that everything is done right with it.

Recent reports have been trickling in on how the Japanese company is gearing up for a massive recall on a global scale that focuses around the Mazda 3 / Axela (as it’s known in Japan).

It seems like even though the recall will be massive in terms of recalled unit numbers, the problem is actually pretty small and related to the windshield wiper systems.

While details are relatively scarce, the recall will focus on Mazda 3s built throughout most of 2008 between January the 7th and December the 22nd with model years tagged at both 2008 and 2009.

Given the sort of production numbers the Japanese hatchback has this period engulfs no less than 494.500 cars. The “nearly half a million” mark is more than truly deserved with some 157.700 units possibly affected in the U.S. alone.

The problem itself is clearly related to the wipers which may malfunction on Mazda 3 models built within this period but sources diverge on exactly what’s causing it.

Reuters would have us believe we’re dealing with a slight electronic malfunction whereas other voices speak of an actual issue on the production line that lead to the grounding wire losing contact over time.

Whichever situation it may be, it is a soft blow to the bulletproof image the Mazda 3 has been having for a while. As a reputable market leader in terms of value for money it would have been nice to have an impeccable record.

After all, this is a bit of a safety issue and not really appropriate for a car which is on the IIHS Top Safety Pick list.

The recently facelifted model was also one of the first to benefit from Mazda’s Skyactiv technology and is the company’s number one cash cow.

Proceedings for the recall itself are scheduled to begin round about at the same time in the U.S. and in Europe with no certain date mentioned apart from a middle of July information.

As recalls go, everything will go by the book; Mazda notifying owners of the affected models as soon as possible and calling them in once everything is settled.

The windshield wiper inspection and, if need be, fixes or replacements will take place free of charge within Mazda’s own dealer network.

At the moment, even though there was a report of the windshield wipers failing on a U.S. spec Mazda 3, no accidents or injuries were recorded on behalf of the problem.

2011 Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro

The Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro wheelbase measuring 2.81 meters (9.22 ft) provides for a kindly spacious interior. The seats are ergonomically shaped and adaptable in their layout. The angle of the rear seat backs can be attuned, and they can be laid flat very easily – it suffices to function the release catches in the cargo area so that they can be folded down onto the seat cushions. This increases the cargo volume from 460 to 1,480 liters (16.24 – 52.27 cu ft). The lithium-ion battery cells are located in a crash-proof area under the cargo floor, minimizing their impact on the cargo volume.

The Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro is motorized by a 2.0 TFSI producing 155 kW (211 hp) and an electric motor producing 40 kW (54 hp). This mixture provides for a system output of 180 kW (245 hp). The standard fuel consumption measured according to the NEDC is just 6.9 liters per 100 km (34.09 US mpg). The quattro permanent all-wheel drive system and an agile chassis are an invincible technology package.

The Audi Q5 Hybrid Quattro will be appearing in the fourth quarter of 2011 at a initial price of EUR 53,700.
