The New York City police department is now richer in terms of eco-friendly vehicles as the Americans from Chevrolet delivered a fleet of 50 Volt units specially fitted with the required police equipment. Even we talk about electric models, the patrol cars are able to face any possible situation, at least unless you run out of power.
With this new fleet of plug-in models, the total number raised to 430, the New York City police department already having 40 Nissan Altima hybrid units and 10 Ford Transit Connect vans.
"When provided with the facts, people become far more likely to choose an electric vehicle. Our job is to ensure the public has the facts, ensure they can make their own decisions and ensure that if they want to drive an electric vehicle, we are providing the infrastructure needed. It's all part of our PlaNYC agenda to create a greener, greater New York City."
Reminding Volt’s performance figures, we have to mention that the model can run 56 kilometers without using fuel or emitting CO2 emissions while the driving range significantly increases to 610 kilometers when the gasoline engine generates power to the 16 kWh lithium-ion battery.
Asking me, I’m not very confident that the electric vehicles are the best option for a police department such as the NYPD as their main mission is to be as fast and accurate as possible in a threatening situation than to be eco-friendly. However, adopting such kind of measures might help the people to see the advantages offered by this kind of vehicles and convince them to get one of these too.
“This is the latest and largest-ever addition of electric vehicles to the City's fleet, which is already the largest municipal clean-air vehicle fleet in the nation," Bloomberg said in a press statement. "We will continue to lead by example, but we also must provide New Yorkers with tools to make environmentally friendly choices in their own lives.”
Rikk 18 Jul, 2011The British people from Project Kahn revealed yet another tuning package for the current Audi Q7 after few months ago they introduced a package that brings as in this case, only styling tweaks with no performance upgrades. If at the previous package Project Kahn attached only few renderings, this time we can clearly see all the improvements as they provided live photos with the revised model.
In terms of styling, the German SUV gets a wide bodykit including new front and rear spoilers, LED lights, wider wheel arches and numerous chromed accents. The exterior tweaks are completed by a new set of 22-inch RSX alloy wheels available with both red and white outline and fitted with bulkier tires.
As mentioned above, there are no performance upgrades available for Project Kahn’s Audi Q7 but besides the aesthetic tweaks, the British tuner added a new sport suspension able to improve the ride and a revised exhaust system. Inside, Project Kahn offers a variety of improvements such as new leather upholsteries, carbon fiber trim but also aluminum and wood components, all for an elegant but also sporty appearance.
“Following on from the hugely successful Audi TR8, TT GT Coupe and the Project Kahn Audi A5, it was only a matter of time before the company would signature stamp an enigmatic dalliance with the Audi Q7. Afzal Kahn's philosophy was always to combine mechanical perfection and exterior beauty, and A. Kahn Design's black and white Audi Q7's are wholly unmistakable, with every external modification serving to coax greater performance from the car,” says the British company.
Even the current Q7 is close to be replaced by the next-generation, the British tuners managed to refresh its appearance and make it more attractive. For now, there are no pricing details on the new Audi Q7 tuning package from Project Kahn but be sure you will get all the details you want by contacting the tuning house or visiting their office. “Climb aboard the Q7 and you'll find a superior bespoke touch. We provide our customers with the opportunity to express one's individuality. And they can have, should they wish, have a tailor made interior complete to their very own specifications,” conclude the tuner.
Rikk 18 Jul, 2011The third-generation Toyota Yaris officially entered the assembly line of the French plant of the Japanese manufacturer from Valenciennes. As mentioned in the title, the small Japanese model reached its third generation bringing a more aggressive approach and also increased dimensions. The Valenciennes plant is responsible of producing the model since 1999 when the first generation entered the market.
At the moment, Yaris is the best selling model of Toyota in Europe and the new generation has all it takes to continue this tradition of very good sales.
The exterior and interior design clearly shows an evolution and has all the ingredients to remain Toyota’s best selling model in Europe. In terms of size, we know that is 3,89 meters long, has a wheelbase of 2,51 meters and a trunk capacity of 286 liters which ensures both sufficient passengers and luggage space. Talking about engine options, Toyota offers two gasoline and one diesel unit while a hybrid version of the new Yaris is expected to debut next year.
The entry-level engine is a 1.0-liter VVT-I able to produce 69 horsepower while the other option is a 1.3-liter VVT-I offering 99 horses. The fuel-efficient diesel unit is the D-4D being able to deliver 90 horsepower and coupled either to a manual transmission or a MultiMode gearbox. The 1.3-liter VVT-I unit will be available with a manual transmission but also with the Multidrive 7-S gearbox.
From the other features of the new Toyota Yaris we can mention the new panoramic glass roof and the rear camera which helps when doing parking maneuvers. The first model rolled off the production line was the three-door variant equipped with the 1.0-liter VVT-I petrol unit.
"I'm very proud of the new Yaris. Since the start of the project, all TMMF members have shown the highest level of commitment to deliver a vehicle with the best possible levels of quality to continue building on the Yaris success story in Europe, and the bright future of TMMF," Makoto Sano, President of TMMF said.
Rikk 18 Jul, 2011Opel decided to reveal the new generation Combo, a model which come with two variants, as a commercial vehicle but also as a family car. If the previous generations Combo were mainly based on another model in the range, Corsa to be more precise, the new generation features various components from Fiat Doblo, Opel signing a special contract in this regard with General Motors.
Scheduled to enter the European showrooms late 2011 or early next year, the panel van variant of the new Opel Corsa comes with two different wheelbases, 2,755 mm and a larger one of 3,105 mm while the length of the model vary from 4,39 m to 4,74 m.
In terms of loading capacity, you will get a total space of 3,800 liters for the short wheelbase while the other one adds extra 800 liters to the cargo space. As mentioned above, the new Opel Combo will be available as a family with a choice of five or seven seats setup, perfect for a passenger car.
Under the bonnet, the Germans from Opel decided to offer four diesel engines and only one gasoline unit. All the engines are fitted with a Start/Stop system able to significantly cut the fuel consumption. The entry level diesel is a 1.3-liter CDTI offering 90 horsepower while a new 1.6-liter CDTI produces the same amount of power. If you want more potent engines you can opt either for the 1.6-liter CDTI producing 105 horsepower or the 2.0-liter CDTI delivering 135 horses.
On the other hand, the only gasoline unit is a 1.4-liter engine able to deliver 95 horsepower coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox and benefiting from the Easytronic system. Moreover, Opel claims that there is also a more fuel efficient or at least money saving option, a CNG unit running on compressed natural gas able to produce 120 horsepower.
The new CNG unit does not benefit from the Start/Stop system, most likely because it was not very easy to adapt it to the new setup. “For easy access to the cargo area, van variants can be ordered with one or two optional sliding doors. The passenger car version has both sliding doors fitted as standard and comes with a top-hinged tailgate. An asymmetrical double wing door is also available. In certain panel van configurations, an additional rear roof hatch can be installed to transport ladders, for example,” adds Opel.
