McLaren MP4-12C sold out for the following three years

Yeah sure, there’s a financial crisis aftermath out in the world and much of the population is still going through it. In the luckier corner of the world however, people are ordering McLaren MP4-12Cs.

According to a recent report, there’s so many of these lucky types that are interested in supercars that McLaren’s new MP4-12C is effectively sold out for the next three years.

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren MP4-12C

With a log book of orders reaching that far, it’s not risky to say McLaren’s CFO will be getting some pretty good sleep each night.

If we take a closer look at the situation, it becomes obvious that people who can afford a supercar of the same class as the McLaren MP4-12C aren’t going to buy it simply because it’s within budget.

The real reasons behind buying McLaren’s latest creation are pretty diverse. First of all, there’s the fact that it’s British and that it has a bloodline like very few others.

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren MP4-12C

Another reason would be the fact that it’s a very rare occasion. If we look at the figures, this is the second McLaren only developed road car they made in nearly 20 years.

The main reason behind the sold out success of the McLaren MP4-12C is in the performance.

In the middle of it, there’s a 3.8 liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that develops 592 horsepower and a maximum torque of 443 lb-ft. Once coupled to a 7-speed Seamless Shift dual-clutch gearbox (SSG) and a very light weight construction, you get some pretty impressive figures.

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren MP4-12C

0 to 62 mph takes just over 3 seconds and the top speed reaches the magic marker of 200 mph. Promising some of the finest handling in the world along with brakes that will take you from 62 to 0 in less than 100 feet is only part of the equation.

According to McLaren’s leadership, the MP4-12C only really competes with the Ferrari 458 Italia and it’s winning. Sporting a lower price tag of “just” $231.400 the McLaren is apparently faster and more comfortable as well as cheaper.

As we can see, there’s ample reason to like the new McLaren MP4-12C and since orders have flooded in for the next three years, it would be easy for the British to make a decision of increasing production.

McLaren MP4-12C

McLaren MP4-12C

That isn’t going to happen. Ian Gorsuch, regional director of McLaren Automotive was the one to explain why. Even though the company is enjoying the success of their MP4-12C, the goal is long term profitability.

This will be achieved by making less cars than the competition, thus ensuring dealers get bigger profit margins and owners get higher residual values.

Lotus CEO praises future Esprit over 458 Italia and MP4-12C

There must be something about the British car companies and their leaders that makes them occasionally talk smack about the opposition. It’s the only way it makes sense.

A few months ago, just after McLaren launched their MP4-12C supercar, Ron Dennins, head of the company talked down the mighty Bugatti Veyron.

Lotus Esprit Concept

Lotus Esprit Concept

Today, looking at Lotus and how they keep on preparing for the launch of a contender on pretty much the same level as the MP4-12C, we find their CEO having a stab at the opposition.

Dany Bahar, CEO of Lotus, stood in front of the media trying to give us a bit of an insight on the future Esprit supercar his company has been brewing for some time now.

There are some technical details involved, but the most important part is that hunkering to an old school Lotus philosophy the new Esprit will be a very satisfying car to drive.

Lotus Esprit Concept

Lotus Esprit Concept

How satisfying? Well, according to the lightweight company’s head, quite a lot better than the competition at Ferrari can make their 458 Italia feel. Not wanting to make the prancing horse feel the only one attacked, Lotus reckon their new Esprit will also be better than the McLaren MP4-12C.

Some bold claims, to say the least, on behalf of the British company that’s actually been struggling for quite some time before making back towards the light.

As a major part of this “unrivaled” driving feel, the engine of the new Lotus Esprit is going to be pretty much spot on and very impressive.

Lotus Esprit Concept

Lotus Esprit Concept

Ditching plans to adopt the 5.0 liter V8 Toyota engine the Lexus IS-F is running on, Lotus will be making an in-house V8 powerplant.

Most likely a naturally aspirated unit, it should be 80kg lighter and 40% smaller than the engine that was to come from Toyota. Despite these “shortcomings” the new Lotus Esprit’s V8 engine should have a horsepower output of about 570.

That makes it spot on for the market and quite the contender if Lotus manages to make the new Esprit lighter than what the competition has.

Lotus Esprit Concept

Lotus Esprit Concept

Part of the new engine and indeed Lotus Esprit’s development will be some very rigorous testing on the Nurburgring Nordschliefe, the Idiada racing circuit and, of course, the home grounds of Hethel.

Further contributing to what the Lotus CEO had to say about the new Lotus Esprit is that even though it will have plenty of technology and even KERS, the driving feel will be retained as their implementation is not going to be restrictive for the driver.

Honda CR-Z Car Concept ,Review,Price & Sales

The Honda CR-Z is a compact hybrid electric automobile manufactured by Honda and marketed as a "sport hybrid coupe."The CR-Z combines a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain with traditional sports car elements. The CR-Z is regarded as the spiritual successor to the second generation Honda CR-X in both name and exterior design.
In the U.S., it is one of the less polluting vehicles available and is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) as defined by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). CR-Z is the only gasoline-electric hybrid model offered by any automaker that can be equipped with a manual transmission.
CR-Z represents the sixth unique version of Honda's IMA technology since the technology was first launched in the first generation Insight 3 door hatchback.Sales of the CR-Z began in Japan in February 2010. Sales in the U.S. began in August 2010.

History

The design and production of the CR-Z followed two other Honda hybrid concept cars: the Honda Remix, introduced at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show, and the Honda Small Hybrid Sports, introduced at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show.
The Honda CR-Z was first introduced as a concept vehicle on October 23, 2007 at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Honda explained the name "'CR-Z' stands for 'Compact Renaissance Zero'— an expression intended to capture the idea of a renaissance in the design of compact cars that begins anew from fundamentals."[11] At the show, CEO Fukui stated that a production model is "in the works" and that the car was intended to be "sporty, incredibly efficient and inexpensive".
The CR-Z was first shown in America at the 2008 Detroit North American International Auto Show.In the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda displayed a revised "CR-Z Concept 2009". In January 2010, Honda introduced the production CR-Z at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Automotive News reported in June 2010 that since its debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the CR-Z Web site has had 1 million hits.Honda has been promoting the 2011 model from the Facebook game Car Town

Powertrain

Rear view of the Honda CR-Z.
The CR-Z is powered by a 1.5 L (92 cu in) i-VTEC SOHC inline-4 engine, designated as LEA, with Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid-electric system. A six-speed manual transmission is standard equipment and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is available. The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 bhp (91 kW; 124 PS) at 6000 rpm and 128 lb·ft (174 N·m) at 1000 to 1500 rpm (123 lb·ft (167 N·m) on CVT-equipped models). The gasoline motor itself contributes only 111 bhp (83 kW; 113 PS) at 6000 rpm and 106 lb·ft (144 N·m) at 4800 rpm. An early road test of a Japanese-market CR-Z resulted in 0-60 mph in 10.5 seconds and the quarter mile in 17.6 seconds.Inside Line performed the same 0-60 mph test in 8.8 seconds, and Motor Trend, in 8.3 seconds.

Fuel economy

Honda CR-Z  Interior
Japanese fuel economy ratings are 4.0 litres per 100 kilometres (59 mpg-US) for CVT and 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres (53 mpg-US) for MT in 10•15 mode; and 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres (53 mpg-US) for CVT and 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres (48 mpg-US) for MT in JC08 mode.
The 2011 CR-Z U.S. EPA ratings are 31 miles per US gallon (7.6 L/100 km; 37 mpg-imp) for city and 37 miles per US gallon (6.4 L/100 km; 44 mpg-imp) for highway with manual transmission. The model with CVT transmission has a rating of 35 miles per US gallon (6.7 L/100 km; 42 mpg-imp) for city driving cycle and 39 miles per US gallon (6.0 L/100 km; 47 mpg-imp) for highway.
When comparing fuel economy to the CR-Z's older cousin, according to fueleconomy.gov, the 1988 gasoline-powered Honda CR-X HF had an EPA rating of 50 miles per US gallon (4.7 L/100 km; 60 mpg-imp) for city driving and 56 miles per US gallon (4.2 L/100 km; 67 mpg-imp) for highway. However, according to EPA's 2008 revised procedures, the CR-X rating is 41 miles per US gallon (5.7 L/100 km; 49 mpg-imp) city driving, and 49 miles per US gallon (4.8 L/100 km; 59 mpg-imp) highway driving.
It is ranked number four on 2011 EPA top ten list of fuel efficient vehicles for CVT equipped model and number ten for manual transmission equipped model.

Price and sales by region

Europe

The CR-Z is scheduled to be launched in the European market by mid 2010. The European version of CR-Z was revealed at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Price in the United Kingdom starts from GB£16,999.

Racing

Two Honda Performance Development CR-Z Racers entered the 25-hour of Thunderhill endurance race held on December 4–5, 2010 at Willows, California. The car, first shown to the public at 2010 SEMA Show, is fully stripped down with lowered suspension. A turbo charger is bolted to the engine raising output to 175 hp (130 kW) and 155 lb·ft (210 N·m) of torque, furthermore, the Integrated Motor Assist setup is modified and a push-to-pass function is added, making a total of 200 hp (149 kW) and 175 lb·ft (237 N·m) of torque when the button is pressed. One of the two entrants battled from a near 10-lap deficit to finish second in the Endurance 3 class, after suffering early in the race from two five-minute "stop-and-hold" penalties caused by refueling problems. The other entrant scored pole position of the class but failed to finish the race. The Honda CR-Z was one of the most showcased cars during the SEMA show earlier in the year and one of the cars produced 533 hp (397 kW). This is what the hybrid engine could withstand in terms of power.

Cool Porsche WP: 910-8

Chevrolet prices the 2012 Sonic Sedan from $14,495 in the U.S.

The current Chevrolet Aveo is going to be replaced by the new Sonic, a model that will be available in two body styles, four-door sedan and five-door hatchback to be more precise. The U.S. debut date for the new Chevrolet Sonic is set for this fall, the sedan version being priced from $14,495 while the five-door hatchback variant starting from $15,395, both prices including the destination charge.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

The Orion Assembly Center in Michigan will be the place where the new Chevrolet Sonic will take birth, three trim levels and two engine choices being available for the debut. To be more precise, the American model comes with an entry-level 1.8-liter four-cylinder unit offering 135 horsepower. It comes with a five-speed manual transmission but for extra $1,070 you get a six-speed automatic transmission.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

The second unit in the range is a 1.4-liter Ecotec able to produce 138 horsepower which is very close to the output of the naturally aspirated 1.8-liter unit we talked above. The Ecotec engine comes with the LT and LTZ trim packages with an additional cost of $700, the estimated fuel consumption spinning around 5.8 liters/100 km (40 mpg).

As there are not any interesting details on the engine range, we can move on to the trim levels. The standard features of the new Chevrolet Sonic include anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC) with rollover sensing, air conditioning, traction control, 10 air bags and power door locks with remote keyless entry.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

2012 Chevrolet Sonic

If you opt for the Sonic LT which starts at $15,695 for the sedan and $16,495 for the hatchback variant, you will get several new features such as power, heated side mirrors, heated front seats, cruise control, fog lamps, new 17-inch alloy wheels but also a six-speaker premium sound system with CD player. There are still no details about the third and also the most generous trim level (LTZ) but expect to get few extra features over the LT package.

"Sonic shares the spirit of Chevrolets like the Corvette by delivering athletic and agile performance," said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. "Today’s customers have high expectations for small cars. Sonic comes with an unexpected level of standard equipment so that every customer will have comforts and amenities they desire."

Volvo to drop S40/V50 stateside

German car companies are doing great, Japanese ones are recovering after a massive disaster, American car makers are recovering after a financial problem but the Swedish ones are still on the edge of the cliff.

After Saab’s continuous issues of recent times, Volvo now announces that they need to tighten their belts and that they will be dropping two of their models from their stateside lineup.

2012 Volvo S40

2012 Volvo S40

U.S. residents will soon no longer be able to buy the Volvo S40 sedan or the Volvo V50 estate. It probably won’t be that big a problem since they weren’t doing it when they could.

According to the Swedish company, the only major reason behind the two cars being dropped is the very low sales and the very big decrease they’ve registered lately.

There’s a bit of a reason behind the Americans not opting for this sort of car and everybody is nicely and slowing walking around the big elephant in the room.

2012 Volvo S40

2012 Volvo S40

Truth be told, the Volvo S40 and its estate counterpart the V50 are both running on the same platform and have similar space offerings. Bartering on the lower side of space, it’s fair to see that the American market as a whole isn’t that interested in the small car.

The good portion that is interested in buying a small vehicle will more likely be temped by the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C Class or various other competitors before they reach Volvo’s dealerships.

Over comparable periods between 2010 and 2011 Volvo S40 sales dropped by a whopping 29% and the V50 did even worse, reaching a decline of more than 50%.

2012 Volvo V50

2012 Volvo V50

Dan Johnston, a Volvo spokesman, said that since the American market isn’t interested in this line of product it makes for bad business practice to keep making and trying to sell it here.

No certain date was brought to our attention for Volvo dropping the S40/V50 but we know for certain it won’t make it past the current, 2012, model year.

As a bit of a curiosity, Volvo a company that made half its name on making the box-like estate will, upon having dropped the V50 have only one estate on sale in the U.S. market in the form of the XC70.

2012 Volvo V50

2012 Volvo V50

Once this is dealt with, Volvo’s U.S. lineup will also include the C30 hatchback, the S60 sedan, the S80 sedan, the XC60 SUV and the XC90 SUV. Weirdly, the C70 coupe-cabriolet survives the 2012 model year as well despite being a slow seller.

Chevrolet Cobalt name lives on

Possibly one of the least competitive cars ever produced during the Detroit Big 3′s period of having no goal or direction, the Chevrolet Cobalt, was sent to a final resting home after being replaced with the new Cruze.

Somehow it seems that us thinking that is just what they were expecting us to do. Oddly enough we fell into this GM trap.

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

Ladies and gentlemen of the astonished audience, the Chevrolet Cobat lives on. Having recently been revealed at the Buenos Aires International Motor Show meet the Chevrolet Cobalt Concept.

Chevrolet came up with quite the surprise for the Argentinian motor show in the form of the Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept and now we see them unveil a second concept just at this show.

The situation on the Cobalt Concept isn’t as simple as that. While the creation at hand does include a name tag from the less desirable list GM produced, the car itself doesn’t appear to have a lot in common with the original wearer of that name.

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

Since details are so slim on the dimensions and the technical sheet we can only guess that the Delta platform the U.S. Cobalt rode on would be rather large for the new concept.

Some voices speak of the Gamma platform that underpins the new Aveo and Sonic being the “culprit” that handles the job and I suppose it is a pretty valid option.

Part of the unveiling of the new Chevrolet Cobalt Concept was a speech from Jaime Ardila, President of General Motors South America. Apart from being filled with the usual “plan and hope for great success” bits, a few reasonably interesting details sneaked in.

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

The new Chevrolet Cobalt Concept is slated to go into production relatively soon with target markets being South America and, possibly, a few other emerging ones.

Under the bonnet, the powerplant range will start with a 1.3 liter and end at 1.8 liter with all engines using the inline four cylinder layout. As far as fuels are concerned, the new Chevrolet Cobalt Concept will be able to run on petrol, diesel or ethanol.

It could be a decent seller in these countries but let’s try and remember that once the concept status is ripped off the name, the new Chevrolet Cobalt won’t have so many LCD Displays inside, LEDs outside and sunroofs in the middle.

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

Chevrolet Cobalt Concept

This should mean that when it hits the markets, the Chevrolet Cobalt will be a reasonably priced car with a reasonable amount of equipment and a reasonable choice of engines.
