The Stuttgart-based manufacturer decided to reveal new details of the 2012 Mercedes SLK AMG, a model which, of course, is scheduled to make its first public appearance at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show. If we can’t distinguish its new appearance as we got nothing but a subtle teaser image, we are able to discuss on the engine which fits the new high-performance model as the Germans revealed a bunch of details in this regard.
Downsizing is quite common in the automotive world these days but Mercedes decided to continue with a naturally aspirated V8 instead of using a turbocharged V6. This might not sound very eco-friendly but you will see that they did a great job on fuel efficiency while the total output significantly increased.
The 2012 SLK 55 AMG is able to return a fuel consumption of 8,5 liters/100 km, which means an improvement of 30% comparing to the old unit. However, Mercedes managed to increase the total output of the 5.5-liter V8 biturbo M125 engine by 62 horses for a total of 422 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque.
The new naturally aspirated engine is based on the AMG M157 unit which can be found under the bonnet of other AMG models such as the CLS 63, S 63, CL 63 and E 63. According to the official details, the new 5.5-liter V8 benefits from the innovative AMG Cylinder Management technology able to improve the fuel economy by using four of the eight cylinders from 800 rpm to 3,600 rpm.
However, when the driver exceeds this level, all the eight cylinders are actioned in less than 30 milliseconds which means that you won’t feel any inconvenience. "There seems to be the necessary demand for diesel cabriolets. We've seen good sales of diesel E-class cabriolets and other manufacturers have had a lot of success with similar models, so it only makes good sense to add it to the SLK," says Mercedes. Full details and photos should be released quite soon considering that the Frankfurt event is not that far away.
Rikk 22 Jul, 2011Audi refreshed their flagship almost a year ago and apart from the aggressive marketing, the enormous amount of features it had something pretty impressive.
Like all generations of the Audi A8, it has a decently impressive engine lineup in terms of grunt and presence. The latest announcement from the Ingolstadt based company takes everything to a new level.
The company’s infamous 12 cylinder engine they, a powerplant that’s arranged pretty unusually within a W shape.
The W12 now grew to 6.3 liters in size and was developed to the point where 500 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque are available in the A8.
Power delivery is going to be handled, more than appropriately, by Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
In between the 6 liter W12 engine and the Quattro system there’s a brilliant a 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.
Since this is the new flagship in terms of engine hardware for the A8 it is only available in the L – long wheel base version but really, that’s more of an advantage than it is a request.
Being longer means the Audi A8 L is heavier. Add that to a point where the new 6.3 liter W12 engine isn’t exactly light and the tons of equipment this land barge is fitted with and you see a bit of a problem.
The 2012 is considerably heavy but, despite this, the new flagship engine can take it from 0 to 62 in just 4.4 seconds and sail all the way to the restricted 155 without as much as breaking a sweat.
Quite a respectable achievement, in fact, the only problem we can face with the brand new 2012 Audi A8 flagship is the price tag it gets.
In the U.S. a MSRP sticker in the window of one of these incredible luxury sedan stands at $133.500. That’s the sort of money you’re going to have to put down before you get some of the unique executive features the 2012 Audi A8 L has.
We’re not sure about this sort of stuff being in the highlights of the updated interior 2012 Audi A8. According to the company it’s now getting an updated multimedia system with Google Earth and Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity.
Further along the interior design offerings of the 2012 Audi A8 we find a new Balao Brown finish along with new full leather packages being made available now.
Audi also made a few updates to the rest of their U.S. lineup but to be honest, they are less than impressive than the A8 long wheel base getting a monstrous 6.3 liter W12 engine.
Lupica G. 21 Jul, 2011It’s been a while since a very rare Ferrari has hit the auction block so it’s pretty understandable why there’s a lot of excitement around this one.
The 1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype will be facing the hammer on August 21st at Gooding’s Pebble Beach auction and it’s expected to set a new record in terms of money spent.
Using previous records of 10 and 12 million dollars spent on a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder in 2008 and a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR in 2009, the new contender has a lot to live up to.
Researchers of auction process of cars claim that beating this sort of sum won’t be troublesome for the 1957 250 TR prototype.
This is because beyond the rarity factor, there’s a lot of money flooding into such a car, but in the case of this particular Ferrari, the story is longer than expected.
22 units were ever made of this particular version of the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR but there’s also a considerable heritage on various racing competitions to consider.
Despite not winning any of them, this 1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, was on the line at Sebring, Nurburgring and even the Targa Florio.
I’m not one of those who think this car is particularly pretty or good looking in any way, but there’s quite a big amount of councours competitions this prancing horse creation entered.
Unlike the racing events, the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR did win quite a few of these titles. It won the Pebble Beach Concours two out of the four times it entered and that’s just the tip of an iceberg.
The Cavallino Classic and the Rodeo Drive Concours both gave this Ferrari 250 TR prototype several awards throughout the years.
What I really appreciate about this car in particular, apart from the value it might get rated for at the auction, is that it wasn’t kept under a cover for all of its life.
Over the years the owner took the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR to places like Monterey Historics and actually race it, so you can imagine why a few times it was close to dying.
Maybe this is why the man is selling it now. In prep for the auction where he’s going to add several millions of dollars to his account, he fully restored the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype to its racing glory.
That means its just as it was back in 1958 at the Le Mans race track, with the original engine, re-trimmed body work and a full racing livery.

Lupica G. 21 Jul, 2011"When we began work on the concept car at the end of the 1990s, Volvo was still primarily known for making family cars designed to protect their occupants in a collision. The SCC signaled the start of a new approach which enhanced safety for the occupants, where the car's most important safety task is to help avoid dangerous situations and accidents in the first place," explains Östen Strandberg, who was responsible for the development of the SCC.
