Never Born: Lamborghini by Giugiaro

Designed in the early 1960s, the model was built independently by Italdesign in 2008

At a recent visit to Giugiaro, this 50 year old unnamed Lamborghini, never before seen, suddenly appeared like an undiscovered Shakespeare manuscript, discreetly displayed in a library with no-one paying attention.
Fabrizio presented the model as a gift to his father on his 70th birthday

Parked under some Greek temple-like stairs at the Giugiaro Design headquarters, the car sat on its period Borranis, painted in a yellow hue unseen this side of Ducati.
No details, no background, but the story is simple: Fabrizio Giugiaro found some of his father's old sketches from the Bertone era (1960-1965). He digitized one of them, milled it, painted it, put on wheels, headlamps, some brightwork around the windows and a period numberplate.
"Happy Birthday father," he then proclaimed on Giugiaro's 70th birthday. "This is actually from you to us, but we made it for you".
So what is it – apart from a beautiful birthday present?
The drawings were marked 'Lamborghini', and though the first Lamborghini was presented at the 1963 Torino motor show, the Torino design community had known for a while that a new Italian supercar was about to be born. Uninvited Pininfarina, Ghia, Vignale, Michelotti and certainly many more (Bertone confirmed that they too, had participated) submitted proposals, without knowing too much about the project.
A design by ex-Bertone (now freelance) designer Franco Scaglione was eventually chosen, but it disappointed many – even Ferrucio Lamborghini himself admitted it might have been a mistake so he sent it to Touring to have it reworked.
We have never seen any of the other designs so it is impossible to get an idea of how the original Lamborghini might have looked. But this sculpture might give an idea of what Bertone intended.
It is entirely different from all the other designs Giugiaro created during his time at Bertone, but that's no surprise. Giugiaro worked on super-disciplined production cars like the Alfa 2000 Sprint, Gordon Keeble, Fiat 850 Spider or Mazda Luce 1500 at the same time as free-wheeling fantasies like the Aston DB4 Jet, the Corvair Testudo (sold at Villa d'Este this summer to a businessman from Milan and now back at Giugiaro headquarters) or the Alfa Romeo Canguro.
Most of the 25 "officially credited" creations he worked on while at Bertone are nothing short of masterpieces.
This Lamborghini is completely different from both the other designs he worked on during that period and what everyone else was doing at the time. The flowing – some might say bulbous – lines recall the Ferrari P3 and P4, but those cars appeared years after young Giugiaro sketched these lines.
There wasn't anything in the Ferrari/Pininfarina portfolio that could have inspired these looks either. The 250 GT SWB, the 250 GT Berlinetta or the 400 Superfast were far removed from this concept car. Pininfarina's Corvair – the Coupé Speciale – was but a pale demonstration of what that car might become. And looking at the Testudo born at the same time, it was clearly evident who the original thinker behind the car was.
The flying buttresses on the Giugiaro Lamborghini are extremely interesting. If Scaglione had continued developing his BAT-series perhaps something similar might have appeared earlier. But he did not – this aesthetic was only publicly revealed on the Ferrari 250 LM Berlinetta, a car that appeared after these sketches were done. The Dodges with similar treatment ('fin shaped rear uprights' was Pininfarina's translated explanation in the late 1960s – it was coined 'tunnel back' in the US) did not appear until 1968/69.
So if this was a proposal for the Lamborghini debutante, why was it discarded? The weak front cannot be the explanation; that could easily be modified. The reason was probably that Lamborghini was after a car with a Gran Turismo image, not an uncompromising two seat sports car with track attitude.
For Bertone it was no disaster; he got his name on both the Miura and Espada – two milestones if ever there were any. But Giorgetto Giugiaro must have been disappointed and, after a lifetime at the top, there hasn't been any Lamborghini to officially wear with his signature.
Was he reminded of that when he saw this car? And was that why he re-ignited the 'who did the Miura' discussion some time ago (he stated fairly clearly that the P 400 was as much his as it was Gandini's)?
Pure speculation, but we'll ask him next time.

Mercedes fits the 2012 SLK AMG with 422HP V8, new details emerged

The Stuttgart-based manufacturer decided to reveal new details of the 2012 Mercedes SLK AMG, a model which, of course, is scheduled to make its first public appearance at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show. If we can’t distinguish its new appearance as we got nothing but a subtle teaser image, we are able to discuss on the engine which fits the new high-performance model as the Germans revealed a bunch of details in this regard.

2012 Mercedes SLK AMG

Downsizing is quite common in the automotive world these days but Mercedes decided to continue with a naturally aspirated V8 instead of using a turbocharged V6. This might not sound very eco-friendly but you will see that they did a great job on fuel efficiency while the total output significantly increased.

The 2012 SLK 55 AMG is able to return a fuel consumption of 8,5 liters/100 km, which means an improvement of 30% comparing to the old unit. However, Mercedes managed to increase the total output of the 5.5-liter V8 biturbo M125 engine by 62 horses for a total of 422 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque.

The new naturally aspirated engine is based on the AMG M157 unit which can be found under the bonnet of other AMG models such as the CLS 63, S 63, CL 63 and E 63. According to the official details, the new 5.5-liter V8 benefits from the innovative AMG Cylinder Management technology able to improve the fuel economy by using four of the eight cylinders from 800 rpm to 3,600 rpm.

However, when the driver exceeds this level, all the eight cylinders are actioned in less than 30 milliseconds which means that you won’t feel any inconvenience. "There seems to be the necessary demand for diesel cabriolets. We've seen good sales of diesel E-class cabriolets and other manufacturers have had a lot of success with similar models, so it only makes good sense to add it to the SLK," says Mercedes. Full details and photos should be released quite soon considering that the Frankfurt event is not that far away.

Mercedes-Benz has announced the opening of a new 1,000 square meters design studio in China, which joins the existing facilities in Germany, US, Italy and Japan.
Chairman and chief executive for Daimler Northeast Asia Ulrich Walker commented: "Design influences from this region will become more important in the cars of tomorrow."
With the new Chinese studio Mercedes-Benz aims at further expanding its share in the Chinese market. In the first half of 2011 sales have increased by 59% compared to 2010.
Annual sales in China are expected to rise more than 20 percent this year, Walker said, and to exceed 300,000 units by 2015, when it is expected to be Mercedes-Benz' largest market globally.

2012 Audi A8 flagship gets a new, flagship engine

Audi refreshed their flagship almost a year ago and apart from the aggressive marketing, the enormous amount of features it had something pretty impressive.

Like all generations of the Audi A8, it has a decently impressive engine lineup in terms of grunt and presence. The latest announcement from the Ingolstadt based company takes everything to a new level.

2012 Audi A8

2012 Audi A8

The company’s infamous 12 cylinder engine they, a powerplant that’s arranged pretty unusually within a W shape.

The W12 now grew to 6.3 liters in size and was developed to the point where 500 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque are available in the A8.

Power delivery is going to be handled, more than appropriately, by Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

2012 Audi A8

2012 Audi A8

In between the 6 liter W12 engine and the Quattro system there’s a brilliant a 8-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Since this is the new flagship in terms of engine hardware for the A8 it is only available in the L – long wheel base version but really, that’s more of an advantage than it is a request.

Being longer means the Audi A8 L is heavier. Add that to a point where the new 6.3 liter W12 engine isn’t exactly light and the tons of equipment this land barge is fitted with and you see a bit of a problem.

2012 Audi A8

2012 Audi A8

The 2012 is considerably heavy but, despite this, the new flagship engine can take it from 0 to 62 in just 4.4 seconds and sail all the way to the restricted 155 without as much as breaking a sweat.

Quite a respectable achievement, in fact, the only problem we can face with the brand new 2012 Audi A8 flagship is the price tag it gets.

In the U.S. a MSRP sticker in the window of one of these incredible luxury sedan stands at $133.500. That’s the sort of money you’re going to have to put down before you get some of the unique executive features the 2012 Audi A8 L has.

2012 Audi A8

2012 Audi A8

We’re not sure about this sort of stuff being in the highlights of the updated interior 2012 Audi A8. According to the company it’s now getting an updated multimedia system with Google Earth and Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity.

Further along the interior design offerings of the 2012 Audi A8 we find a new Balao Brown finish along with new full leather packages being made available now.

Audi also made a few updates to the rest of their U.S. lineup but to be honest, they are less than impressive than the A8 long wheel base getting a monstrous 6.3 liter W12 engine.

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype expected to cash in big time

It’s been a while since a very rare Ferrari has hit the auction block so it’s pretty understandable why there’s a lot of excitement around this one.

The 1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype will be facing the hammer on August 21st at Gooding’s Pebble Beach auction and it’s expected to set a new record in terms of money spent.

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

Using previous records of 10 and 12 million dollars spent on a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder in 2008 and a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR in 2009, the new contender has a lot to live up to.

Researchers of auction process of cars claim that beating this sort of sum won’t be troublesome for the 1957 250 TR prototype.

This is because beyond the rarity factor, there’s a lot of money flooding into such a car, but in the case of this particular Ferrari, the story is longer than expected.

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

22 units were ever made of this particular version of the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR but there’s also a considerable heritage on various racing competitions to consider.

Despite not winning any of them, this 1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, was on the line at Sebring, Nurburgring and even the Targa Florio.

I’m not one of those who think this car is particularly pretty or good looking in any way, but there’s quite a big amount of councours competitions this prancing horse creation entered.

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

Unlike the racing events, the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR did win quite a few of these titles. It won the Pebble Beach Concours two out of the four times it entered and that’s just the tip of an iceberg.

The Cavallino Classic and the Rodeo Drive Concours both gave this Ferrari 250 TR prototype several awards throughout the years.

What I really appreciate about this car in particular, apart from the value it might get rated for at the auction, is that it wasn’t kept under a cover for all of its life.

Over the years the owner took the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR to places like Monterey Historics and actually race it, so you can imagine why a few times it was close to dying.

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype

Maybe this is why the man is selling it now. In prep for the auction where he’s going to add several millions of dollars to his account, he fully restored the 1957 Ferrari 250 TR prototype to its racing glory.

That means its just as it was back in 1958 at the Le Mans race track, with the original engine, re-trimmed body work and a full racing livery.

Volvo History: SCC turns 10 years

"When we began work on the concept car at the end of the 1990s, Volvo was still primarily known for making family cars designed to protect their occupants in a collision. The SCC signaled the start of a new approach which enhanced safety for the occupants, where the car's most important safety task is to help avoid dangerous situations and accidents in the first place," explains Östen Strandberg, who was responsible for the development of the SCC.

Volvo SCC turns 10 years:
No other concept car in the history of Volvo Car Corporation has meant more for the company's technological advancement than the Volvo SCC (Safety Concept Car).
Ten years after its 2001 world premiere in Detroit, the Safety Concept Car can look back on a fantastic "career".
  • It was the starting point of the company's leadership in active safety. About 15 of the advanced technical solutions found in today's Volvo models first saw the light of day in the Volvo SCC.
  • From the design viewpoint the SCC also inspired the design of the successful Volvo C30 model.

The Volvo SCC is an early example of the cumulative effect of close cooperation between Volvo Cars' designers and engineers.
"Concept vehicles are usually design or technology studies that give car buyers a taste of the future. The Volvo SCC, however, has added impact because it was both attractive and high-tech. It is an early example of how we design our cars around our customers' wishes, needs and limitations," says Volvo Car Corporation's President and CEO Stefan Jacoby.

One of the project group's most important goals was to demonstrate the possibility of combining world-class safety with a sporty, sleek shape all packaged in a relatively small car.
"When we began work on the concept car at the end of the 1990s, Volvo was still primarily known for making family cars designed to protect their occupants in a collision. The SCC signalled the start of a new approach which enhanced safety for the occupants, where the car's most important safety task is to help avoid dangerous situations and accidents in the first place," explains Östen Strandberg, who was responsible for the development of the Volvo SCC. He adds:
"With the driveable Safety Concept Car, we showed that all these smart, collision-preventive technological solutions were within reach. It is fair to say that the success of the SCC project triggered Volvo Car Corporation's groundbreaking dedication to active safety systems."

Star in DetroitThe Volvo SCC generated enormous interest at its unveiling to a massive audience on the Volvo Cars stand at Detroit Auto Show in January 2001. That autumn, the world press had the opportunity to test-drive the concept car in a closed-off section of Seville International Airport in southern Spain.
The following year, Swedish Prime Minster Göran Persson was one of many people that tested the car - and later the car went on a nationwide tour of the USA, reaping immense praise from coast to coast.
"The attention it attracted was actually greater than we dared hope. I'm convinced that this was largely because the SCC was attractive as well as technically advanced - but without being complicated. That's exactly the combination that echoes Volvo's approach and it is still our strength," says Mikael Edvardsson, one of the engineers responsible of the technology integrated into the Safety Concept Car.

From concept to productionIn 2002 work got under way on translating the technical studies showcased in the Volvo SCC into production-ready safety technology. One year later, Volvo Car Corporation initiated the project that would result in the world debut of the Volvo C30 in Paris in 2006.

Today - ten years after the premiere success - around 15 of the technological solutions presented in the Volvo SCC can be found in Volvo Car Corporation's model range. Technological solutions that now help drivers the world over avoid both minor incidents and major collisions.

"One small but revealing example of just how much of the SCC made it into series production is the fact that even the car's livery became reality - the paintwork of the one-off SCC bears a remarkable resemblance to the Orange Flame colour that you can specify for your Volvo C30," relates Östen Strandberg.

There's an exception to every rule, however. One of the SCC's most attention-grabbing features never made it into production: the Eiffel Tower-like see-through A-pillars remained a part of the C30 project, but eventually made way for a conventional alternative owing to obstacles when it comes to strength, build complexity and cost.

SCC technology in today's Volvo modelsHere is a list of the technological solutions that made it from the Volvo SCC to some or all of Volvo Car Corporation's current models:
  • Forward collision warning - today in its third generation with Pedestrian Detection, Collision Warning and Full Auto Brake. In addition, there is the ground-braking low-speed system, City Safety, which is fitted as standard to several Volvo models.
  • Information projected on the windscreen - today the head-up display is part of the Collision Warning system.
  • Technology that monitors vehicles in the "blind spot" and alerts the driver. Today this is known as BLIS (Blind Spot Information System).
  • Warning system to alert the driver to the risk of straying from the lane. Today known as Lane Departure Warning and Driver Alert.
  • Cruise control that maintains a set distance behind the vehicle in front. The present ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) operates all the way down to standstill in cars with automatic transmission.
  • Flashing brake lights during hard braking - today known as Emergency Brake Lights.
  • Safety cameras - today there are integrated reversing camera and grille-mounted camera offering drivers a 180-degree field of vision (accessory). A camera is also a key component in the Pedestrian Detection and Collision Warning system.
  • Advanced headlights that follow the curvature of the road as the car turns - today Active Bending Lights.
  • Further-developed HMI (Human Machine Interface) - now Volvo Sensus.
  • Height-adjustable rear seat. Present today in the integrated two-stage child booster cushions.
  • Protection for pedestrians - today this system is found as the energy-absorbing front structure and bonnet and in Pedestrian Detection.
  • Steering wheel adjustable for height and reach - fitted today as standard.
  • Passive unlocking and engine starting - today Keyless Go.
  • Communication with the car via mobile phone - today via a newly developed Mobile Application that was introduced in spring 2011.

Ahead of its timeMikael Edvardsson sums up:
"When the Volvo SCC was unveiled, it was packed with sensational technology. Bearing in mind the interest of the car-buying public in active safety systems today, it's easy to see that the concept car was way ahead of its time. It's evidence that Volvo is and will remain at the cutting edge when it comes to automotive safety."
