Never Born:The Cadillac CTS Wagon

I just spent a night with a 2011 Cadillac CTS-V wagon, and I can't help but feel a little grateful. Grateful that Cadillac not only saw fit to launch a five-door version of its latest CTS (along with such an awe-inspiring performance version), but also that the end product was a far cry from the company's first attempt at a CTS wagon.
About a year or so back, I was driving by a GM-owned parking lot in Metro Detroit that was filled with vehicles slated for disposal. Something caught my eye — I thought I saw a first-generation Cadillac CTS, but I also thought I glimpsed an elongated roof and an extra set of pillars. Was I seeing things?
Not exactly. I circled back, and peered through a fence from the safe haven of a sidewalk. Sure enough, tucked alongside other engineering mules and scrapped vehicles was a design mockup for a first-gen CTS wagon.
The 00-00-00 license plate, coupled with a number of faux trim elements peeling from parts of the car, indicated this spent most of its life within GM's design studio, and likely never moved under its own power. But the thing was still captivating — not only was it evidence Caddy had considered a CTS wagon before, but a high-riding, butched-up wagon designed to appeal to SUV-loving buyers.
The end result looks a little like an American knock-off of Audi's not-so-successful A6 Allroad Quattro. In addition to the tall stance and large wheels, designers were apparently also working on adding anodized front and rear skid plates, grey cladding along the rockers, and matching grey bumpers out back.
This all suggests Cadillac was considering adding all-wheel-drive to the CTS line way-back when. That was certainly plausible, considering two other variants of the Sigma platform were capable of delivering power to the front wheels, but it would have been new for the CTS itself. Although the second-generation was (and is) sold in AWD form, the initial model never was.
What I'd like to know is exactly when this idea came about. I can't help but think this steps closely on the toes of the original SRX, which not only shared its Sigma platform with the CTS, but always felt a little more wagon-like than many of its competitors. I wouldn't be surprised if this concept was nixed after Audi canned the Allroad in the states, opting instead for conventional SUVs and crossovers instead.
That's a mystery I may never solve. Few at GM seem to remember the project, or those who do remain silent, apparently in the hope they'll someday forget. Regardless, the mockup itself is history (literally; it was demolished a week after I shot these photos), but thankfully the idea of a CTS wagon wasn't so easily dismissed.

Mercedes Benz CLSK/h—Daimler Benz's smallest  4-door coupe, the CLSK, in performance Hybrid form. I used the just-released C63 AMG Black Series coupe as a base image. I deleted the unnecessary fender vents, reduced the quad exhaust to a more manageable dual exhaust and deeper rear bumper.—speakers  for the new "audible" Hybrid laws coming online shortly would be hidden in these chromed exhausts outlets. I changed the pillared coupe bodystyle to a 5-door hatchback for this compact hybrid Mercedes Benz performance/luxury/economy sedan.

To complete the plan, Toyota will refine the concept model that was introduced at the Tokyo Auto Salon last year and will unveil a new look in the event the Nurburgring 24 hour endurance race, in Germany this weekend. Toyota parts to be upgraded in this model is more for the appearance of the exterior and some changes to the engine. Driving force model is still the same as the concept model shown at the TAS (Tokyo Auto Salon) 2010 that uses a V6 engine that will drive the rear wheels loans combined electric motor from the Lexus RX450 to drive the front wheels.

The thesis project of the IED Turin three-year course in Transportation Design - Car Design, consisted in the participation in the Ferrari World Design Contest, launched by the marque of the Prancing Horse in cooperation with the Autodesk technical partner. Entrants included more than fifty design schools and universities from all over the world who forwarded more than 200 projects to the Maranello Design Centre.

The finalist projects from IED Turin in Ferrari World Deign Contest 2011 were:

- Ferrari 540 Pegaso, by Giuseppe Ceccio, Giacomo Pierin, Matteo Politano;
- Ferrari Xezri, by Samir Sadikhov;
- Ferrari Ethesian, by Alessandro Nardolillo

The Ferrari Xezri by Samir Sadikhov from Azerbaijan is a sportscar inspired by wind for both the aesthetics and the aerodynamics, taking into consideration the principles of "flexible aerodynamics".
The rear wing, positioned horizontally on the car's roof, is automatically activated at speeds higher than 200 km/h, revealing an air intake that allows to better cool the engine.
The Xezri project was selected for the "purity and elegance of its design, proposed in future perspective. The shapes are reminiscent of some of the most charming Ferrari of the past."
The 2nd place won by Turin IED follows the first prize received at the 2005 edition of the contest.
Samir Sadikhov received the award from Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa, Paolo Pininfarina and Flavio Manzoni.
IED participated in the final stage of the contest with two other projects: the 540 Pegaso by Giuseppe Ceccio, Giacomo Pierin e Matteo Politano and the Ethesian by Alessandro Nardolillo, all graduated from the three-year post-diploma course in Transportation Design – academic year 2010-2011.
The three projects were selected by Ferrari among a total of 11 proposals, developed by students as their final thesis for the course.
All the projects will be on display at the "Apriti IED – Naturally Powerful 2011″ exhibition, which will take place at the school headquarters until the end of September.

Luc Donckerwolke Named VW Group's Head of Advanced Design

The designer of the Lamborghini Murcielago will make the jump from the SEAT brand to becoming VW Group's Head of Advanced Design starting August 1st of this year. 

The 46 year old will report directly to Design Chief Walter de Silva in the VW hierarchy, while at SEAT he will be replaced by Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos.

Donckerwolke is a very multicultural man, having been born in Peru, he is currently a citizen of Belgium, yet studied in Africa, Europe and South America. His career reportedly started out with Peugeot in France back in 1990, and after two years he moved to Ingolstadt for a 2 year stay at Audi Design. Between 1994 and 1996, he worked with Skoda Design Center Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic, where he was involved with the 1996 Octavia and 1999 Fabia.

The designer returned to Audi in 1996 as head of the exterior department at the Munich design studio, subsequently becoming studio director in Ingolstadt. In 1998 he joined the Lamborghini brand as design project manager and was named Head of Design at Lamborghini in 2003. After that, he became Director of Design at SEAT in 2005.

Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos, his replacement at SEAT, joined the Volkswagen Group in 1995 and was involved in designing several models at the Spanish firm. He became part of the Group's Design Center Europe in Spain from 1997, where he took charge of exterior design on various projects for the SEAT, Volkswagen and Audi brands. Mesonero-Romanos moved to Renault in 2001, assuming responsibility for several design projects.
