Nissan decided to introduce the new Micra DIG-S version in the UK, a model which debuted earlier this year, in March, at the Geneva Motor Show to be more precise. The Japanese company is already offering the new Micra in the United Kingdom but the new DIG-S version (Direct Injection Gasoline – Supercharged) could be a more attractive offering for a segment of customers.

The Japanese manufacturer says claimed: “Nissan has released the prices for its new highly-advanced, Micra DIG-S. Representing the latest in low-emission engine technology, the DIG-S offers the performance of a bigger petrol engine but with the fuel economy of a diesel.”

The new Nissan Micra DIG-S is fitted with a 1.2-liter supercharged gasoline unit able to deliver 98 horsepower. The three-cylinder unit returns a fuel economy of 4,09 liters/100 km (68,9 mpg UK) and 95 g/km CO2 emissions. The figures above are available for the entry-level Visia version while the Acenta and Tekna variants return figures of 4,3 liters/100 km (65,7 mpg UK) and 99 g/km.

Nissan had to operate serious modifications in order to obtain more power but in the same time good fuel consumption figures. In this regard, the direct injection engine uses valve timing control with eco mode, revised pistons and a higher compression ratio along improved exhaust gas recirculation. The 1.2-liter engine under the bonnet of the DIG-S model uses Miller Cycle, allowing the inlet valve to remain open for a longer period of time, making the compression stroke more efficient.

Finally, the auto Start/Stop system which comes in standard for this model managed to reduce even more the fuel consumption. “More energy is saved by using an intelligent alternator which recharges the battery when the engine power is not in demand, such as under braking,” adds the company.

The starting price of Nissan Micra DIG-S Visia is £11,150 while the most expensive version, Tekna, is priced from £13,650. The unit comes in standard with a five-speed manual gearbox but for extra £1,000 you can get the CVT automatic transmission.

The Germans from Opel introduced the 2012MY Insignia, a model which receives some updates in terms of engine options along some systems able to improve the fuel economy. According to Opel, the starting price of the 2012 Insignia is €23,330 including VAT, a number of significant improvements being operated over the current model.

To being with, the engine range gets a new 1.4-liter ecoFLEX unit able to produce 140 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The new petrol unit replaces the 1.8-liter engine returning a fuel consumption of only 5,7 liters/100 km and CO2 emissions of 134 g/km.

With such resources, the model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 10,9 seconds being able to achieve a top speed of 205 km/h. The improved fuel economy is achieved mainly thanks to a bunch of innovative systems such as the Start/Stop technology, low-resistance tires and an aerodynamic underbody.

Other features include a set of 17-inch alloy wheels and electric power steering REPS (Rack Assist Electric Power Steering). The styling tweaks include a new set of alloy wheels alongside a new Luxor metallic paint, “Indian Night” nappa leather at the interior, Forward Collision Alert system and a new infotainment system.

“Since making its debut, the Opel Insignia has won more than 50 national and international awards, including the especially prestigious title “Car of the Year”. Customers have affirmed this critical success with great demand – over 400,000 units of the brand flagship have been sold to date,” says the Rüsselsheim-based company.

But we are not done with the engine range yet as Opel revised the 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol unit as well, increasing its output by 30 horsepower and 50 Nm of torque. Therefore, the petrol engine delivers now 250 horses and 400 Nm of torque offering a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,5 seconds when coupled to a six-speed manual transmission.

The top speed of the model is limited to 250 km/h while the fuel economy is reduced to 8,4 liters/100 km and 197 g/km CO2 emissions. This is mainly due to the well-known Start/Stop system which cuts the figures by 0,5 liters/100 km.

The last engine offering is a 2.0-liter petrol unit designed for the front-wheel drive version which produces 220 horsepower and returns a fuel consumption of 7,6 liters/100 km.

Lamborghini made a habit out of replacing their models very slowly but they’re just about to get a replacement for the baby of the range, the Gallardo.

Before it happens though, before the Cabrera is unveiled by the Italians, they are making a special edition of the Gallardo and they are going to bring it to the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Unlike most of the previous limited edition Lamborghini Gallardos this one is slated to be a considerable speed freak edition, something that reminds us of the Murcielago SV.

When the Lamborghini Murcielago was killed off, the SV version was introduced as a lightened, hardcore version of what was their previous flagship model.

If the Gallardo is to get a similarly thought out version, it’s doubtful that it will enjoy the same sort of SV branding but that’s not to say it won’t be fast and incredibly well done.

According to some of the rumors that have turned up about it, this special Lamborghini Gallardo will be based on the Super Trofeo racer the factory runs in their own one-make series.

Don’t be frightened of the idea, the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo which is about to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show won’t be just a racing car they sell to the public.

They are going to work on it to the point where it is not only usable on the public roads (legally and humanly) thus making the final hurrah of the baby Lambo as quick as the bigger brother’s.

Stripping the interior, some of the sound deadening and combining it with extensive carbon fiber components for the body panels and interior is the least we can expect from the upcoming Lamborghini Gallardo ST.

Not much detail is available but we expect the 5.2 liter V10 engine develop 570 horsepower and to only be available with the E-Gear six speed transmission.

Final weight figures could come in at around 100 lbs less than the already acclaimed and lightened Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.

Naturally, these sort of figures bring along a new set, thus making way for a 0 to 62 mph time of somewhere in the region of 3.0 seconds and a top speed of around 210 miles per hour.

We’re also expecting a price of around 250.000 dollars for the Lamborghini Gallardo ST and that the company will end up dedicating it to the 150th anniversary celebration for the unification of Italy.

Safety is no joking matter, this is why the chaps who work for the NHTSA seem to be relentless at doing their job with it.

The newest of announcements from the U.S. safety representatives turns their attention to the E65/E66 version of BMW’s 7 Series.

Bavaria’s big and slightly fat luxury saloon is under investigation from the NHTSA after they received some complaints regarding parking roll-aways.

BMW isn’t the sort of company that brings incredible updates to the 7 Series and it’s with this report that we find how many shared components are shared.

This is because the same problem with the parking brake and lack of its functioning is spread over quite the large period of production.

The new investigation from NHTSA includes all BMW 7 Series models from 2002 to 2008 model years, thus including E65 and E66 internal designations.

A total number of 120.000 units is estimated to be engulfed in this new security check so there’s quite a lot of automatic gearboxes and parking brakes to go through.

Actually, the probe isn’t focused on the gearbox or parking brakes directly but vehicles that were fitted with BMW’s Comfort Access, a system which allows for access and ignition courtesy of a little electronic card.

The same sort of electronic control domination continues around the transmission shifter which has a gear selector mounted on the steering column.

Mixing everything together means you have a system which automatically puts the car in park after the driver of this sort of BMW 7 Series turns the engine off using the “starter” button.

The procedure is governed by an entire set of parameters but somehow, despite this and the BMW 7 Series’s talents, incidents have occurred where owners saw their cars roll away shortly after.

Happily, the NHTSA reports there haven’t been any accidents or injuries that are related to parking issues with the E65/E66 7 Series.

That’s why, at the moment it’s just a preliminary investigation and not a full one. Between this and the Pagani Huayra’s airbag exemption issues it feels like the NHTSA certainly has its hands full.

If only it did seem like the U.S. authority had a lot of testing to do on these high price exclusive cars we all tend to think of as being as close to perfection as it comes.
