The Americans from General Motors proudly announced that they just outsold the rivals from Toyota taking the lead of the automotive world. The first six months of this year brought GM increased sales which helped the company became the world’s biggest automaker with 4,536 million units sold between January 1st and June 30th.

Comparing to the same period of 2010, General Motors managed to increase the sales by 8,9% while the earthquake which hit Japan in March has seriously shaken Toyota’s sales, the Japanese company descending all the way to the third place.

However, between General Motors and Toyota is Volkswagen AG, the German group ranking on the second place with total figures of 4,13 for the first half of 2011. As mentioned above, the third place is occupied by Toyota, the Japanese company registering sales of 3,37 million units worldwide, with 23% less compared to the same period of 2010.

They already have a backup solution planning to produce around 350,000 vehicles in addition starting this fall in order to balance the production rate which encountered difficulties due to the major earthquake. Toyota also announced that the production recovered to about 90% of its initial rate before the earthquake.

“Even if Toyota recovers production, it will take another few more months for sales to actually recover” as it takes time to deliver vehicles to dealers, said Takeshi Miyao, an analyst at consulting company Carnorama in Tokyo.

General Motors

It remains to be seen if the Japanese people from Toyota will be able to recover the lost ground and take the leading back from the American group. The other brands of the group such as Lexus, Hino and Daihatsu could have the decisive word until Toyota will return to the normal production rate.

According to the first predictions, there are not too many chances for the Japanese company to climb in the standings this year but starting 2012 they will undoubtedly be back in the game.

Renault Samsung Motors decided to unveil the new SM7 after seven years since the first generation of the model entered the Asian market. The new SM7 promises to set a new benchmark in the saloon segment of the Korean market with premium features and biggest interior space comparing to its rivals.

The company also announced that the new SM7 required R&D investments of over €207 million and around 32 months for developing. The new model with hit the South Korean showrooms somewhere this month while the prices were kept at approximately the same level comparing to the previous generation.

Said Renault Samsung Motors CEO Jean-Marie Hurtiger: "All-New SM7 is Renault Samsung Motors' new flagship and delivers everything customers expect of a big premium saloon, including refined, luxurious styling, exceptional quality, and outstanding comfort and driving pleasure thanks to the contribution of the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s world class technological expertise. All-New SM7 will set new standards in Korea’s big family saloon car market."

In terms of power, the customers will have to choose between two engines borrowed from Nissan, a 2.5-liter engine producing 190 horsepower and 243 Nm of torque and a more powerful 3.5-liter offering 258 horsepower and 330 Nm of torque. Both are six-cylinder engines and are offered with a six-speed automatic transmission fitted with a manual selector mode.

Renault Samsung SM7

Talking about fuel economy figures, Renault Samsung announced a combined fuel consumption of 9 liters/100 km for the entry-level unit while the second, more powerful V6 returns 10,4 liters/100 km. Other noteworthy features of the model are the increased interior space, up to 70mm of knee room for the rear passengers, but also an optimized air ventilation system and Aviation headrests.

There is also a Sport Mode function for the all-new SM7, a mode able to increase the driving pleasure. It comes with paddle shift gearshifts and represents a first in this segment. Pricing starts from €19,72 (30 million Korean won) and goes all the way up to €25,641 (39 million Korean won).

Fisker is a very interesting company. I mean it, given how the world works now with the acceptance of electrically powered vehicles, they decided to come up with something new that requires early adoption.

Not sure about why they would do it but as it happens, we’re now told that they plan to unveil some sort of crossover that’s powered electrically at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Fisker Karma S Convertible

Much like their Fisker Karma, it will most likely benefit from the same sort of electric motor, battery and control arrangement while still retaining the range “get out of jail free card” – a range extender.

Fisker was known for making a business case for a new lineup, thus including what could be an SUV type of car, but we had little hearing of what’s coming up with a possible crossover.

The best case scenario would be that Fisker doesn’t exactly have all the cash it needs to develop a new platform, the sort which would be implied by an SUV.

Fisker Karma S Convertible

With a crossover, the Californian car company would once again, be using a “get out of jail free card” since they can basically “recycle” the Fisker Karma‘s drivetrain and underpinnings.

Apart from these assumptions we’re missing out on the details of what the Fisker crossover could be like, but happily, the American company will have a slightly bigger Frankfurt Motor Show booth than that.

With the new unveiling of the crossover Fisker is going to turn up at the German motor show with a smaller model, the Nina, something that’s supposed to be a lot more practical and affordable than their normal lineup.

Fisker Karma S Convertible

Don’t worry though, Fisker doesn’t plan to make small and ugly cars for a living. As it happens, they also plan to unveil the facelifted version of the 2009 Fisker Karma S Convertible.

It seems like the EV part of a new car isn’t going to change the appearance of glamorous cars or exquisite details that make a boulevard cruiser.

Regarding some of the details underneath the upcoming Fisker attractions, a new four-wheel drive drivetrain is in the works, one which includes a two speed gearbox.

It may not sound like the edge of progress but gearboxes that work with electric motors are substantially different from the normal ones so the new two speed unit would allow for better range and a higher top speed.

The Frankfurt Motor Show isn’t going to be all about the massive manufacturers having an opportunity to show off. It’s going to be pretty big an occasion for the smaller guys to do the same thing.

Tuners are becoming more and more present on this sort of scene and at this particular event the Mercedes-Benz GL Class isn’t going to be just seen at the three pointed star’s stand.

Carlsson CGL45

Carlsson, a German tuner, plans to showcase the CGL45, a conversion of the big bruiser that offers highlights to both styling and performance for the GL Grand Edition.

Even though they stuck to the smallest and most fuel efficient engine, which is the 3.0 liter V6 diesel, Carlsson managed to squeeze quite a reasonable update on it.

We don’t know about all of the mods Carlsson is going to fit to this engine apart from a stainless steel exhaust system but we do know that the output grows from a standard 265 horsepower and 620 Nm of torque to 310 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque.

That’s a 15 percent boost in performance and if the “styling” updates Carlsson give the Mercedes-Benz GL class have anything to say about it the aerodynamics package will help even further.

It’s this package that includes wider wheel arches, new side and rear skirts and a front spoiler and front lip duo. These were apparently all shaped in the wind tunnel with efficiency in mind.

Sadly, I’m not very convinced by how after going through all of this work, Carlsson threw away most of what’s going on with the radiator grille and open air ducts in order to go for a more imposing look.

Carlsson CGL45

You see, as part of aerodynamics, the way the car enters the air is important, but it’s almost equally important to consider how much of an opening is present on the front of the car and how the air moves around it.

The rest of the stuff Carlsson’s CGL45 offers is pretty standard on a tuned up car. There’s a set of huge 22 inch alloy wheels from Vredestein, there’s some special tire choice in order to make up for the loss in performance that implies.

Inside, Carlsson decided to fit the CGL45 with Nappa leather, Alcantara, wood and stainless steel accents.

The driver gets to enjoy aluminum pedals, the opportunity to show off a signed plaque that’s fitted on the central console and there’s also a button with the stupid LED daytime running lights that are now part of the car trendy fashion atire.
