Mercedes are gearing up to take on the Chinese market in a full on assault on the luxury market, Audi have so far been the leaders in the premium market but may expect some serious competition from Mercedes over the next 24 months. Mercedes are planning to invest 30 billion RMB into the Chinese market which will see them expand their production capacity, introduce new locally made models and also produce more parts in China.

In the first half of 2011 Mercedes' sales in the Chinese market expanded by 120%, but was sales were limited by the low production capacity at Beijing-Benz. Mercedes are pushing for the GLK to be put into production at the end of 2011 and other compact models will be made in China in 2012, specifically the A and B Classes are to be introduced as well. Mercedes are pushing to release at least one model in China per year over the next 5 years, an EV is expected to be released in 2014.
